Remember that guy ?
Time for some nostalgia.... I have been a Super-hero fan since I put my eyes on a comic-book. I read the books & watched the cartoons, but, as good as the art was, it didn't look "real". It's now a common thing to see super-heroe movies & live shows, but when I was a kid, there was quite nothing, at last in France. The only one I saw was SUPERMAN with Christopher Reeve, & of course loved it, but Spectreman was totally different & ...new!! A golden giant fighting with monsters sent by a gorilla with a blonde wig to conquer earth, it was not the kind of thing you could read in the american funny-books, and it was for "real"!! Very impressive for a youngster in those years, my school buddies & I instantly became addicted to that show.
By today's standards, it's totally outdated & kitsch, some would say laughable, & I don't think a teenager who watched MATRIX or the X-MEN movies would believe such show could have impressed someone
Many many years later, when japanimation, manga & live-show became so popular, I had the chance to meet Mr Narikawa Tetsuo, who portrayed the hero in the series, at a convention. He kindly signed some memorabilias, & I have a photo of him with me
For this picture, I tried to capture the "cheesiness", the retro feel &, yep, the drama (As usual, Tokyo ended in ruins every time a monster showed a tentacle...) of the series.
Pencil, ink & 'toshop.
